Dunaújváros is situated at the geometric centre of Hungary, on he right riverside of the Danube, to the south of and 65 km away form Budapest. Its history datesback to the Bonze Age certified by Koszideri bronze treasure of unrivalledvalue. Later, at the same place, Intercisa was a limes settlement and military camp of the Roman Empire. The village Dunapentele that made room for the new town was a settlement of market-town rank in the 19th century. In spite of the long historical past, Dunaújváros as a town was started to be built lightly more than fifty years ago. It is half a century that the then authorithy decided that a large integrated metallurgic works and a new town shall be built in the plateau of Pentele. Based on this decision, the bulilding of Dunaújváros started on May 2nd, 1950. At present the town of county right with 53 thousand inhabitants is the commercial, economic, health care and intellectual centre of the region. In addition to the bustling cultural life, the sport also plays an important part int he life of townsmen. It is no more chance that Dunaújváros won the honourable title „National Sport Town” in 1998. The background of the continuous successes in sport is guaranteed by the outstanding network of projekt: swimming pool, ice hall, stadium, drill hall and hall for ball games.
The town committed in respect of environmental oriented development: a biological waste water treatment plant of European standard is operated in the town, the selective waste collection was started, the air pollution is regularly measured; the town has a large green area in relation to its area.
In the field of education, each kind of institution is represented, from the nursery home to the high school. Although the demographic wave trough did not keep away from Dunaújváros, yet, the expressed objective is to preserve the nature of educational centre, or even, to develop it spectacularly.
The economy of Dunaújváros is characterized by its variety. The largest employer is Dunaferr Gmbh functioning as the flagship of the Hungarian steel industry. In the life of the group of firms, the year 2004 represents the change and renewal; in fact, as a result of a privatization competition, the iron- and steel production continues with a new owner, the Donbass-Duferco investment concern.
Relation to the infrastructure investment affecting the regional development, decisions of governmental level were taken; thus; the M6 motorway section between Budapest and Dunaújváros will be built. Due to the investments, Dunaújváros has good reasons to try get hold of the central logistic role of the region. In order to coordinate and stimulate the further development, the Local Authority of Dunaújváros launched the „ACÉL-HÍD Program” (STEEL-BRIDGE Program). The main objective of the program is to give dynamism to the region, set it to a new way of development, there by improving the quality of life of the inhabitants living in Dunaújváros and it surroundings, improving their chances for venture and promoting the economic growth of the region.
